What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is one of the oldest forms of  'hands on' musculoskeletal medicine that focuses on the treatment of joints, muscles and the spine.

It treats the body’s musculoskeletal components (joints, muscles and spine) through subtle but effective techniques such as soft tissue stretching and massage, deep tactile pressure, and the mobilisation and gentle manipulation of joints. This makes it suitable for the treatment of adults, children and infants.

Osteopathy is based on a detailed understanding of anatomy, biomechanics and reflexes of the musculoskeletal system to diagnose and treat ailments and dysfunction in the human body.   An osteopath aims to treat the cause of the pain, not just the symptoms.

Diagnosis and treatment is based on the philosophy that the body is a total functioning unit with all the body's systems like your muscles, nerves, and joints working interconnectively to maintain health.

Osteopathy not only treats the specific site of pain or discomfort, but also examines the whole body to find direct or indirect causes of dysfunction or pain, e.g. back pain can be a secondary effect of hip, knee or foot problems or can come from simple causes like work or leisure activities, poor posture or incorrect lifting techniques.

Inner-City Osteopathy & Pilates offers more than just treatment. We will devise an ongoing management programme to prevent recurrence, and advise on diet, exercise, posture and breathing to ensure long-term relief and wellbeing.

All Australian Osteopathic practitioners complete a 5 year Intensive University Degree (B.App.Sc, B.Osteo.Sc or M.Osteo.Sc)  and are Government Registered.

Inner-City Osteopathy & Pilates Osteopaths are members of the AOA (Australian Osteopathic Association), and regularly undertake post graduate courses and seminars to keep up to date and improve their hands on and clinical skills.

Pre & post natal treatment

Our Osteopaths have undertaken obstetrics and gynecological training in osteopathic technique.  Osteopathic therapy during your pregnancy may help with pain and discomfort you may be feeling in your spine, pelvis or ribcage.  Also musculo- skeletal treatment during your pregnancy gently releases any dysfunction in your pelvis preparing your body and pelvis for the birth of your child. Treatment can be performed on our special pregnancy table.

We help you prepare for the physical demands of pregnancy and labour, ensuring the pelvis is structurally aligned, and minimising head, neck, leg and back pain and indigestion.  We also treat pelvic instability and have the benefit of having a fully equiped Pilates studio with Clinical Pilates to further enhance your treatment outcome and management by working on your pelvic floor and core stability muscles.

Post-birth our focus is to normalise and revitalise your physical wellbeing.  Osteopathy supports your body's recovery with hands on treatment & exercise presciption to resolve any pain, pelvic floor and abdominal weakness or misalignment associated with childbirth.
